Trains, commuter rail and stations: how to read a departure on htrain.fr

Rail has its own rules: a station can be served by several carriers, a train can be cancelled hours in advance, and the platform is sometimes known only at the last minute. Here is what htrain.fr can tell you, and what it cannot.

One station, several carriers

Unlike a bus stop, a station is rarely tied to a single network. The same station may see regional trains, commuter rail, long-distance services and sometimes a tram-train, each described in a separate dataset, published by a different authority on the French national open transport data platform (transport.data.gouv.fr).

We merge those sources to rebuild a station’s service, but the merge is not always perfect: when two datasets name or locate the same station differently, it can appear twice, each entry carrying only part of the services. This is a known limitation of aggregating open data, not a deliberate omission.

Scheduled times, real-time and cancellations

A departure shown without a label is scheduled: it comes from the service calendar published by the carrier. A departure flagged as real-time has been confirmed by an operational feed, which we poll roughly every five minutes. On rail, that feed also carries cancellations: a cancelled train disappears or is marked as such as soon as the carrier publishes it.

The platform number, however, is information many carriers do not release in their open data at all, or only a few minutes before departure. If htrain.fr does not show it, it usually does not yet exist in the source, the station display boards remain the reference.

Planned works and replacement services

Service alerts, collected every ten minutes, report ongoing disruptions and announced engineering works. On the rail network, works are often planned well in advance and concentrated on weekends, with closures of several hours on a section of line.

When a section is closed, the carrier usually runs a replacement coach. Those road services are not always integrated into the timetable datasets: they may appear only in the text of the alert. Read the full message before concluding that no service is running.

What htrain.fr does not do

htrain.fr is an independent, free service that requires no account. We are not affiliated with any carrier, we neither sell nor book tickets, and we cannot correct incorrect data at its source.

For a train with compulsory reservation, a short connection, or a departure at the very start or end of service, the carrier's information prevails. htrain.fr is there to check a station's next departures quickly, not to guarantee a journey.
